Character Info
Character's Name: Gaku Yaotome
Character's Canon: IDOLiSH7
Character's Age: 22
Canon Point: The summer after Part 2
Background/History
• Gaku was born to an unnamed mother and Sousuke Yaotome. Sousuke was always preoccupied with 'the one that got away', however, so he and his wife eventually divorced, with Sosuke taking primary custody of Gaku in process.
• Gaku grew to dislike his father and strongly prefer his mother's company, eventually taking up work in the soba shop that his maternal grandparents owned. Sousuke recognized Gaku's potential, however, and constantly pushed him to improve. Despite his intense dislike for his father, Gaku came to enjoy singing and dancing and finally agreed to become a part of his father's production company, Yaotome Productions.
• At age 20 he, Tenn Kujo, and Ryuunosuke Tsunashi formed the idol group TRIGGER; they debuted shortly afterward and quickly gained popularity due to a combination of their talent and Yaotome Productions' aggressive promotional campaigns.
• Though they were flawless on the stage, TRIGGER initially had a very rough behind-the-scenes relationship; Tenn and Gaku constantly butted heads, with Ryuu trying (and often failing) to keep the peace. It didn't take long for them to find common ground (incidentally, by the three of them standing up to preserve TRIGGER's integrity) and since then the three of them have become close (if quarrelsome) friends.
• Two years after TRIGGER's formation another idol group, IDOLiSH7, started to gain recognition and fame. Though Gaku enjoyed IDOLiSH7 for their own merits, knowing that his father hated the head of their production company inspired him to 'spite help' IDOLiSH7, becoming their fan and recommending them for a special music program to help them gain popularity. One of TRIGGER's production staff stole a song (titled 'Let's☆SUMMER!') from IDOLiSH7 and Sousuke launched a smear campaign against them, leading the members of TRIGGER to stage a miniature rebellion until they were allowed to compete fairly. The two bands were able to develop a friendly rivalry and eventually went head-to-head as part of an annual music festival, with IDOLiSH7 taking home the grand prize. In the process, Gaku developed a crush on IDOLiSH7's manager, Tsumugi.
• With their friendly rivalry established, IDOLiSH7 and TRIGGER began to work together more frequently. The two bands joined up with a third, more experienced group - Re:vale - to host a three-day concert both for Re:vale's 5th anniversary and to reopen the Zero Arena, named after a legendary idol that had disappeared years previously. Though Re:vale and IDOLiSH7 both came under fire for 'sullying' Zero's memory in various ways, TRIGGER managed to stay out of the crossfire and support the other two groups. The anniversary concert ended up being a tremendous success.
• Since they had learned Let's☆SUMMER! was stolen, TRIGGER had refused to (and been forbidden from) performing it. But the following summer, the members of IDOLiSH7 convinced TRIGGER that the song was too good to simply be abandoned. At a joint concert the two groups performed the song together, resolving the uneasy feelings they all had about the song and the circumstances surrounding it.
Strengths:
Confident: The line between confidence and arrogance is a thin one, but fortunately Gaku has laded himself firmly on the side of 'confident'. He doesn't doubt himself or his decisions often and he's able to stand on the stage without any doubt. What keeps him from being arrogant is that his confidence is born from practice and experience; rather than believing in something like innate talent, he believes in the hard work that both he and the other members of TRIGGER have put into their craft.
Driven: And speaking of hard work, Gaku is very good at it. Though he's been accused of only getting ahead because of his voice, his father's connections, and his naturally good looks, Gaku had made sure to earn his place in the idol world. He understands how critical it is to work hard and always strive to improve, and how quickly he can be replaced or pushed out of his position in the idol world. When he sets himself to a task he follows through on it completely, and when he knows that the future of TRIGGER is as stake he can push himself to work even harder.
Loyal: Arguably Gaku's most admirable trait, and furthermore the motivation behind many of the other actions he takes. Despite butting heads with Tenn, despite teasing Ryuu about his 'heroine'-like efforts to keep the peace between the two of them, Gaku is fiercely loyal to TRIGGER. He's not only concerned with keeping the group together and performing, he's also invested in protecting their reputation. He detests the use of shady tactics to keep them ahead of the competition, and he and the other two will (and have) stood up again his father's shady tactics before; at one point they even went so for as to use their own money to distract the staff with a party, cut Sousuke's phone line, and locked the four of them in Sousuke's office until he agreed to stop spreading rumors about rival bands. He trusts and believes in both Tenn and Ryuu, despite constantly fighting the former and frequently teasing the latter.
Weaknesses:
Sensitive: Gaku's father (who is also TRIGGER's manager) is not a pleasant man. Between his dad and Gaku's own chilly public persona, it's no shock that there's plenty of unpleasant rumors about his father, his band, and himself floating about. But despite that collected, icy front he puts up in public, it's actually Gaku that's bothered the most by said rumors. While he understands that there's no way to make everyone like them, knowing that his friends and his fans are subject to harsh commentary due to their relation to him gets under his skin. While he's good at not letting this show in public, it's something as weighs on him all the same. It gets his mood down to know that other people are being treated 'poorly' because of him, especially over rumors that are untrue, and knowing that those close to him aren't bothered by the rumors doesn't help.
Petty: Gaku has a hard time letting things go, especially when he thinks he's been slighted and especially when Tenn is involved. It's easy for him to assume that the intentions of others are mischievous or impure. He can get stuck in the idea of paying other people (mostly Tenn) back for minor slights. He has an exceptional aversion to letting anyone else put cracks in that cool front he presents, too. It's fine for him to let it drop, but he gets embarrassed and annoyed when someone else points out that he's being softhearted, sentimental, and gentle, and tends to get caught up in arguing the point that it's fine and expected to be all of these things.
Hot-Headed: Gaku is quick to make assumptions and quick to let his temper get the best of him. He bickers regularly with Tenn, while Ryuu has had to hold him back from actually, physically striking his own father before. He isn't the sort of rethink his knee-jerk reactions unless given a reason to do so, though even when he doesn't sticking with his first assumption about a person or place it can still get him in trouble. Whenever he sees his father with a woman he doesn't recognize, for example, he tends to immediately conclude she's one of his (numerous) mistresses, even when the woman in question is even younger than Gaku himself. He'll even assume the worst of the rest of TRIGGER (okay, it's actually just Tenn he does this with) despite being their good friends. If he thinks he should do something then he gets hell-bent on just doing it, even (or maybe especially) in situations where he should really refrain.
Powers/Abilities: None
Other Noteworthy Traits: Gaku is an incredibly talented singer and actor and his talents have helped make his group one of the most popular in Japan. He's also an expert soba deliveryman.
Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Just his idol outfit.
Color: Blue ;; While Gaku's theme color is actually dark grey, the colors used in his character design, clothing, and room decorations are often desaturated, slightly greenish blues; for a specific color I'd love to have #284054, but if something even greyer is allowed that would be wonderful.
